The Acres of Fun Preschool, located in Kampala, Uganda, was established in 2022 by Irene Nakalembe. In this IMS recognized school, the teaching staff (see picture) have been developing the skills of scientific teaching from Lee’s book, “The Technology of Scientific Education.” In its short history, the school enrollment has grown rapidly due to the high regard it has in the local community.
Irene is also a member of the IMS-sponsored Character Teaching (CT) project, where she has been active with others members in Uganda seeking to gain government approval for its eventual operation. Her professional background is in the United States, where she is employed as a staff nurse at the Stanford University Medical Centre in Palo Alto, CA. Although a native of Uganda, she is now a US citizen, and divides her time between the two countries, as well as other charitable healthcare projects for children.
Irene notes that the school’s focus is to respect the diverse individual learning style and interests of her diverse enrollment. Attention is also given to create an inviting place for social interaction among the children as well. For example, the school provides a wide variety of activities outside the classroom, including swimming, ballet, sports, young farming, music, and much more.
The school compound is located in a well-gated community for maximum safety and well-being of the children. In addition, further safety is ensured by monitoring for the entire school. Irene also states that “we have a healthy well-maintained compound full of plants and flowers that make its environment friendly for the children.”
