IMS Correspondence Course

 
The correspondence course of study for Montessori teaching consists of a sequence of 22 lessons set forth as follows:

Initial Observation Report

This lesson requires the student to observe and report on children working in a Montessori environment. The report follows a specific outline form and establishes the student’s initial awareness of the “child” as distinct from its “environment”.

Montessori Principles

This sequence of nine lessons deals with applying the three Montessori principles as they emerge within the subject matter of the following lessons:

        • Montessori Overview
        • Importance of 0-6 Age Range
        • Normalization
        • Freedom and Discipline
        • Fantasy/Imagination
        • Montessori Environment
        • Adult’s Function
        • Lesson Presentation
        • Montessori and Beyond

Observation

Four direct observation visits to a Montessori environment are required. A written report is submitted for each visit according to specific outline forms provided; e.g., Physical Environment, The Child, The Adult, Adult/Child Engagement, etc.

Child Development

This sequence of four lessons considers the nature of the young child and the issue of managing misbehavior in the Montessori environment. Specific lesson are:

        • Child’s Life in Society
        • Development of Intelligence
        • Managing Misbehavior
        • Classroom Management Practi­cum

Montessori Primary Materials

Four lessons introduce the use and purpose of Montessori primary materials in the following areas:

Admission and Enrollment

Admission is open to all individuals with high school diploma or equivalent. Procedures require completion of an enrollment application, submittal of proper tuition fees and postsecondary level transcripts, if any.

A full refund of all moneys paid will be provided to all individuals upon request prior to completion of the enrollment application. Tuition is $130 per lesson and is due with each lesson according to a specified lesson submittal schedule.

Application

  • Complete Preliminary Course Application (see response form on page 7 of this publication) and send with $70 registra­tion fee to: IMS. 8115 Fenton St., #304, Silver Spring, Maryland 20910 USA.
  • Applicant will be sent a course catalog and enrollment application.
  • Complete and return enrollment application with materials fee of $70.
  • Students accepted into the course receive the study guide materials and re­quired texts to begin the course.

Certification

Certification is issued to each student upon completion of the 22 lesson course of study in the form of a teaching credential and verification statement. This credential is recognized by the Society for a three year term which is renewable upon completion of further Society approved course work.

Placement Assistance

While no teaching position or minimal salary is guaranteed, placement assistance is offered to enable students in the course and graduates to obtain employment at a Montessori school.
